The Pastoral Assistant Scheme in Camden has been running for fifteen years, and in that time thirty young adults have experienced urban ministry with us, the majority of them moving on to train for Ordination in the Church of England. A year with us is a wonderful opportunity to serve God amongst some of the capital’s most vulnerable people, to make friends and to discover to the full the gifts that God has given you for ministry.

The post of Pastoral Assistant offers a broad range of opportunities enabling you to experience almost every aspect of Parish Ministry. These include the leadership of worship and prayer, preaching and serving, participating in the life of our schools (two Church schools and one Community School), pastoral visits, running a Winter Night Shelter for the homeless, working with our community partners and chaplaincy work at a local hospital and mental health unit.

There are four churches in the Parish – St Mary’s, Somers Town; St Michael’s, Camden Town; St Pancras Old Church and St Paul’s, Camden Square – all rooted in the Catholic tradition of the Anglican Church and each community strongly committed to mission and community engagement. The congregations reflect the rich ethnic diversity of the area and are actively exploring new ways of being the Church in the 21st century.

Camden has long been a place where rich and poor live side by side. This dynamic parish is home to some 25,000 people who live in some of the most deprived council wards in the country. It also attracts a wide range of retail, service and media companies that provide a workplace for many and there is a growing student population. At weekends, Camden Lock is a major tourist attraction and thousands of commuters travel through King’s Cross, St Pancras and Euston stations every day. The Eurostar terminal at St Pancras International, the redevelopment of the King’s Cross Railways Lands, plans for HS2 make the parish the focus of major national regeneration projects.

There are currently three full time clergy – The Revds James Elston (Acting Team Rector), Paschal Worton (Team Vicar) and Oliver Petter (Assistant Priest). There is also a Self-Supporting Minister and two Parish Readers. The team meet together to pray the Daily Office each morning and evening and there is a Daily Mass.

Pastoral Assistants are appointed a clergy supervisor and offered ongoing formation and study time. Accommodation is provided in a four-bedroom vicarage (Camden Urban Mission House) where the Pastoral Assistants live together in community alongside a House Co-ordinator.

Our Pastoral Assistants this year are:

Helena Bickley (St Michael’s)

Alan Rimmer (St Mary’s)

Yaroslav Walker (St Pancras Old Church & St Paul’s)
